Broken Neck from a Car Accident

Broken Neck from a Car Accident 1A broken neck can be devastating because it is damage to the cervical spine, which can be deadly. There is also the fact that the higher an injury on the spinal cord, the more it is going to affect the body. A broken neck is no exception since it can lead to paralysis and other devastating consequences that can affect a person for the rest of their life.

When the broken neck is the result of someone else’s negligence in a car accident, the entire situation becomes even more devastating because the victim never did anything to cause this type of injury. Because of this, Brotherly Law wants to help accident victims hold those responsible accountable for their actions. While seeking a meaningful settlement doesn’t take away the long journey of recovery that is ahead, it does take care of the financial damage that comes from medical bills and lost wages from being unable to work.

Consequences of a Broken Neck

Sometimes when a broken neck doesn’t immediately end in death, it can days, weeks, or months later because of complications. If a person survives, then they have a long road ahead. To begin this journey, a broken neck injury attorney in Philadelphia will be needed to negotiate a settlement. In pursuing that settlement, it is important that the other side knows what sort of consequences the victim is suffering and will suffer. Those consequences may include:

  • Limited or no neck and head movement
  • Quadriplegia, which is paralysis below the neck
  • Inability to move without the assistance of another person
  • No bowel or bladder control
  • Difficulty swallowing and chewing, resulting in a long-term feeding tube
  • 24/7 medical care
  • Breathing assistance with a ventilator

These are just some of the devastating consequences. Anyone who has had a broken neck or has had a loved one with a broken neck knows what the worst effects are and how they can affect the lives of everyone around the victim. It’s not the victim’s fault, and the entire family becomes involved.

Even if the broken neck is a crack in one of the cervical vertebrae, there are complications that can come about. One wrong movement and the injury can become worse, resulting in the need for more aggressive treatments and medications.

Broken Neck Treatment

Broken Neck from a Car Accident 2There are seven cervical vertebrae in the neck and which one is damaged is going to determine which treatment is used. If the damage is limited to a minor compression fracture, then a cervical brace will need to be worn for up to 8 weeks until the bone heals. Once it is healed, therapy will be needed to relieve stiffness and restore head and neck movement.

A more aggressive form of broken neck treatment is traction therapy where a halo type brace is placed around the head and traction is applied by free weights on a pulley. This is a very rigid type of cervical brace and it limits motion because the fracture may be very unstable. This brace must remain in place for 8 to 12 weeks so the cervical bones have time to heal.

When surgery is needed, the purpose is to relieve spinal cord pressure and to remove any intervertebral discs that may be damaged. Removing these damaged discs removes pressure from the spinal cord. Once the discs are removed, the vertebrae may be fused together to provide stability. Other tools like wires, screws, and plates may be used to hold the vertebrae in place while they heal.
